How to Use AI to Plan the Perfect Trip

The Old Way Was Painful
Remember planning a trip before AI? Open 30 browser tabs. Read conflicting TripAdvisor reviews. Spend 4 hours building an itinerary you'll abandon by day two. Try to figure out if that restaurant is actually good or if the reviews are fake.
AI doesn't eliminate all of this, but it compresses hours of research into minutes. And the results are usually better than what you'd build yourself, because AI has effectively "read" every travel blog and guide ever written.
The Master Trip Planning Prompt
Start here:
"Plan a [number] day trip to [destination] for [number] people. Travel dates: [dates]. Budget: [amount] not including flights. We like [interests - food, hiking, history, nightlife, relaxing, etc.]. We don't like [tourist traps, early mornings, etc.]. Give me a day-by-day itinerary with specific restaurant and activity recommendations. Include estimated costs."
The more specific you are, the better the output. "We like food" gives you generic restaurant suggestions. "We like hole-in-the-wall ramen spots and natural wine bars" gives you gold.
Itinerary Optimization
Once you have a base itinerary, refine it:
"Look at this itinerary and optimize it for minimal travel time between locations. Group activities that are near each other on the same day. Also flag if anything might be closed on the days I planned."
This saves you the classic mistake of zigzagging across a city because you didn't think about geography.
Budget Planning
"Break down expected costs for a 5-day trip to Tokyo for 2 people: accommodation (mid-range), food (mix of cheap and nice), transportation, activities, and miscellaneous. Give me a daily budget and a total estimate."
AI can't give you exact prices, but it can give you realistic ranges that are much better than guessing. It'll also flag things you might forget to budget for - like transit passes, tipping customs, or entrance fees.
Local Knowledge
This is where AI surprises people:
"What do locals in [city] wish tourists knew? What are common tourist mistakes? What neighborhoods should we explore that aren't in typical guides?"
The answers won't be as good as asking an actual local, but they're better than relying on the same "Top 10 Things to Do" listicles everyone reads.
Packing Lists
"Create a packing list for [destination] in [month]. Trip length: [days]. Activities planned: [hiking, city exploring, nice dinners, etc.]. I'm a light packer - keep it to a carry-on."
AI will account for weather, planned activities, and your style preferences. It'll also remind you of things you'd forget - adapter plugs, specific medication, photocopies of documents.
Real-Time Trip Help
AI is useful during the trip too:
- "It's raining in Barcelona and our outdoor plans are ruined. What indoor activities are good nearby?"
- "Translate this restaurant menu" (take a photo and upload it to ChatGPT)
- "We're at [location]. What's good for lunch within walking distance?"
- "Our flight got cancelled. What are our rights for compensation?"
The Comparison Prompt
Can't decide between destinations?
"Compare a 5-day trip to Portugal vs. a 5-day trip to Croatia in September for 2 people who like food, beaches, and history. Compare: cost, weather, ease of travel, food scene, crowds, and overall vibe. Give me a recommendation."
This replaces hours of Googling with a clear, structured comparison.
Booking Tips
AI can also help with the booking process:
"What's the best strategy for finding cheap flights from LA to Tokyo in March? Which days are typically cheapest? Which booking sites should I check? Any credit card points strategies?"
It won't book for you (yet), but it'll arm you with strategies that actually work.
