Free AI Tools Everyone Should Know About

Jake Read

You Don't Need to Pay for AI

There's a weird misconception that useful AI costs money. It doesn't. The free tiers of most AI tools are genuinely powerful - powerful enough for 90% of what normal people need.

I've tried hundreds of AI tools. Most are garbage, repackaged wrappers around the same technology with a $20/month price tag. Here are the ones that are actually worth your time - and they're all free.

ChatGPT (Free Tier)

What it is: The OG. General-purpose AI assistant.

Best for: Writing, brainstorming, explaining things, quick tasks.

The free version gives you: Access to GPT-4o (their best model) with some daily limits. For most people, you'll never hit them.

My favorite use: Rewriting awkward emails. Paste your draft, ask it to "make this more professional but still friendly." Game changer.

Claude (Free Tier)

What it is: Anthropic's AI. Think of it as ChatGPT's more thoughtful cousin.

Best for: Long documents, nuanced analysis, anything where you need careful thinking.

Why I like it: Claude tends to give more balanced, less hype-y answers. If I'm making a big decision, I ask Claude.

Perplexity

What it is: AI-powered search engine that cites its sources.

Best for: Research. Anything where you need facts, not opinions.

Why it's better than Google for research: It synthesizes information from multiple sources and tells you where it got the information. No more clicking through 10 blue links.

Google NotebookLM

What it is: Upload documents and have AI conversations about them.

Best for: Students, researchers, anyone dealing with long PDFs or articles. Also generates AI podcast-style summaries of your documents, which is wild.

Killer feature: Upload a 50-page report and ask specific questions. It only answers based on what's in the document - no hallucination.

Gamma

What it is: AI presentation maker.

Best for: Creating decent-looking presentations in minutes instead of hours.

The reality: It won't make a perfect presentation, but it'll give you a solid 70% starting point. Better than staring at a blank PowerPoint.

Remove.bg

What it is: AI background remover for images.

Best for: Product photos, profile pictures, any time you need a clean cutout.

Why it's here: Because it works perfectly and takes 3 seconds. No Photoshop skills needed.

Otter.ai (Free Tier)

What it is: AI transcription and meeting notes.

Best for: Recording meetings, lectures, interviews and getting searchable transcripts.

Free tier gives you: 300 minutes per month of transcription. That's plenty for most people.

Canva (AI Features)

What it is: Design tool with AI features baked in.

Best for: Social media graphics, flyers, invitations. The AI can generate images, remove backgrounds, resize for different platforms.

The free tier: Surprisingly generous. Most AI features are available without paying.

What Not to Waste Time On

A few categories to avoid:

  • "AI writing detectors" - They don't work reliably. Don't stress about them.
  • AI avatar generators - Fun for 5 minutes, useless after that.
  • Any tool that charges $50+/month for something ChatGPT does free - There are hundreds of these. They're all middlemen.

My Recommendation

Start with three: ChatGPT for general tasks, Perplexity for research, and one specialized tool for something you do regularly (Canva for design, Otter for meetings, etc.).

Master those before adding more. Tool overload is real - better to use three tools well than ten tools poorly.
