ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude: Which Free AI Should You Actually Use?

Jake Read

People ask me this question more than any other: "Which AI should I use?"

The honest answer is that I use all three. Every day. But not for the same things. Each one has a personality, strengths, and blind spots. After spending the last year switching between them constantly, I have opinions.

Here's the real breakdown. No marketing speak. Just what I've actually experienced.

The Three Contenders

ChatGPT by OpenAI. The one everyone knows. Your mom has probably heard of it. Available at chat.openai.com and has a solid free tier.

Gemini by Google. Used to be called Bard. Lives at gemini.google.com. Free tier is generous and it's deeply connected to Google's ecosystem.

Claude by Anthropic. The least famous of the three but quietly excellent. Available at claude.ai with a free tier that resets daily.

All three are free to start. All three are genuinely useful. The differences are in the details.

Writing

This is where most people start, so let's go here first.

Claude wins for writing. It's not even close. If you need to write an email, a cover letter, a blog post, or anything that needs to sound like a human wrote it, Claude produces the most natural-sounding text. It doesn't over-explain. It doesn't pad sentences with filler. It just writes clearly.

ChatGPT is good at writing too, but it has a tendency to be verbose. You'll notice it loves bullet points and numbered lists even when you didn't ask for them. It also has certain phrases it falls in love with and uses constantly. You'll start recognizing them.

Gemini's writing is fine but tends to feel the most "AI-generated." It often produces text that reads like a well-organized Wikipedia article. Accurate, but not something you'd want to put your name on without heavy editing.

My advice: Use Claude when the writing needs to sound like you. Use ChatGPT when you need a solid first draft you plan to rewrite anyway. Skip Gemini for creative writing.

Research and Facts

Gemini wins here. It's connected to Google Search, which means it can pull in recent information and cite sources. When I need to fact-check something or get up-to-date information, Gemini is my first stop.

ChatGPT has web browsing now too, but it's slower about it and sometimes doesn't search when it should. It'll confidently give you an answer from its training data when it really should have checked.

Claude is the most honest about what it doesn't know. It'll tell you straight up when it's not sure about something. I respect that. But it means for pure research, it's not the fastest path to an answer.

My advice: Start research questions with Gemini. If you want a deeper analysis of something you've already found, bring it to Claude.

Everyday Tasks

This is the stuff most people actually want AI for. Planning a trip. Writing a grocery list. Figuring out what's wrong with your car. Drafting a complaint letter to your landlord.

ChatGPT wins for everyday tasks. It's the most versatile general-purpose tool. It handles quick questions, brainstorming, and random life tasks really well. The mobile app is polished and fast. It also has the best memory between conversations if you use the same account regularly.

ChatGPT also has image generation built in, which is genuinely useful for things like creating birthday cards, visualizing home renovation ideas, or making social media graphics.

Gemini is solid for everyday tasks too, especially if you're already deep in the Google ecosystem. It can look at your Gmail, check your Calendar, and pull info from Google Maps. That integration is powerful if you let it in.

Claude is great for longer, more thoughtful tasks. If you need to analyze a lease agreement, compare insurance plans, or think through a big decision, Claude is patient and thorough. It's less good for quick one-off questions.

My advice: Keep ChatGPT on your phone for quick daily stuff. Use Gemini when you need something that connects to your Google life. Bring Claude in when you need to think something through carefully.

Learning New Things

Want to learn how investing works? Understand a medical diagnosis? Figure out how your car engine actually functions?

Claude wins for learning. It explains things at exactly the level you need. Ask it to explain something simply and it actually will, without being condescending. Ask for more depth and it goes deeper without dumping jargon on you.

ChatGPT is also good for learning but sometimes over-explains or gives you more context than you asked for. It's like that friend who can't answer a simple question without giving you the entire history of the topic.

Gemini is decent for quick factual learning but struggles more with nuanced explanations. It tends to give you the textbook answer rather than helping you actually understand.

My advice: When you genuinely want to understand something, talk to Claude about it. It's like having a really patient tutor.

The Free Tier Reality

Let's talk about what "free" actually means because they all have limits.

ChatGPT Free: You get GPT-4o with usage limits. When you hit the cap, it drops you to a smaller model. You'll notice the quality dip. This usually happens if you're having long conversations.

Gemini Free: Generous limits. You get access to Gemini 1.5 Pro which is quite capable. The catch is that Google uses your conversations to improve their models unless you turn that off in settings.

Claude Free: You get a daily message allowance that resets. During busy times, the limit can be tight. You might run out mid-afternoon if you're a heavy user.

None of them are truly unlimited for free. But all of them give you enough to be genuinely useful for normal daily use.

My Actual Setup

Here's what I actually do every day:

Phone: ChatGPT app. It's my go-to for quick questions, voice conversations while driving, and random life tasks.

Research: Gemini in a browser tab. Anything where I need current information or Google-connected data.

Deep work: Claude in a browser tab. Writing, analysis, learning, and any task where quality of thought matters more than speed.

I don't pay for any single one of them exclusively. If you're going to pay for one, my recommendation depends on what you do most:

  • Pay for ChatGPT Plus if you use AI constantly throughout the day for varied tasks
  • Pay for Gemini Advanced if you're a Google power user
  • Pay for Claude Pro if writing and analysis are your main uses

Just Pick One and Start

Here's the thing that matters more than which one you choose: actually using it. I talk to people all the time who spend weeks researching which AI to use and never actually start.

Pick ChatGPT. It's the safest default. It's good at everything, great at most things, and the most polished experience. Use it for a week. Then try the others and see if they fit better for specific tasks.

The gap between these three is way smaller than the gap between using AI and not using AI at all.
